The South Africa-Washington International Program is helping to inspire, prepare and support South African youth to lead a sustainable democracy with a peaceful and prosperous future for all its citizens.

Goals

The VISION of SAWIP is of a South Africa with strong leaders who have a global perspective, who serve others with humility and integrity and in so doing inspire future generations to do the same.



Its MISSION is to inspire, develop and support a diverse new generation of emerging South African leaders within multiple disciplines to:

  • successfully address transformation challenges in our post-conflict society in order to strengthen a sustainable, efficient democracy with active citizens;
  • build trust between members that transcends racial, socio-economic and religious boundaries;
  • commit to ethical, professional service in all spheres of public and private life;
  • gain a deeper understanding of global leadership challenges while developing mutually beneficial relationships with young leaders in the United States, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and across the world; and
  • strengthen and deepen relationships on multiple levels between the United States and South Africa.

VALUES AND BELIEFS

  • Acknowledgement of the need for young people to become involved in determining the future of the Republic of South Africa;
  • Encouragement of personal and professional development through rigorous community service and outreach, acknowledging that a strong service ethos is a characteristic exhibited by all great leaders;
  • Belief that leadership is predicated on a responsibility to others and a commitment to service; • Belief that hands-on experience is vital to an individual’s self-confidence and ability to exceed expectations;
  • Trust that a course of mutual understanding and shared experiences will foster a common ground for a diverse group of individuals that transcends gender, race and ethnicity; and
  • Belief that engaging young leaders from around the world engenders fresh perspectives, generates new ideas and solutions, and an appreciation of world views.
