SAWIP offers a six month leadership development experience both in South Africa and Washington, DC, and then ongoing growth and service opportunities as program alumni.
Initial Program
SAWIP currently recruits 15 high potential South African citizens and permanent residents with a record of excellence and service from the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and the Western Cape. Students are eligible starting in their second year of academic study to the age of 25 years.
SAWIP’s program is informed by its philosophy of the servant leader and its MISSION, VALUES and BELIEFS.
Alumni Program
SAWIP Alumni receive ongoing development and networking opportunities through:
- participation on the Alumni Committee
- opportunities to serve, ex officio, on the SAWIP(SA) Board
- participation in activities organized by the SAWIP Boards and Alumni Committee
- attendance at the SAWIP Alumni ‘Change Agent’ course
- active participation in the student selection and orientation camps
- delivery of selected curriculum sessions
- opportunities for public speaking at SAWIP events
- long-term mentorship and support by Friends of SAWIP or through the informal SAWIP network
- the SAWIP Alumni Mentorship Program which enables SAWIP Alumni to further develop their leadership skills by mentoring both current SAWIP students and others identified through formal partnerships with SAWIP
