Team of 2011 meets SAWIP funder and friend of Stellenbosch University

Despite the cold winds and harsh rain, the SAWIP Team of 2011 gathered at the residence of Robert Kotze (head of Post Graduate and International Office at Stellenbosch University) on Thursday evening, 1 September, to meet with Mr Steven Georgala, managing director of Maitland management group and SAWIP supporter.

The evening provided a great opportunity to not only catch up with the SAWIP Team of 2011, but to also discuss contemporary issues facing South Africans.

The topic for the evening was “Giving back to our universities as alumni: how can we encourage giving back to allow our universities to continue running?”. Mr Georgala challenged the SAWIP team to think about practical ways in which universities could create sustainable alumni networks which ensure the continuation of quality education. What seemed to be an easy topic to discuss at first, actually turned out to be a difficult one to break down and examine. It was evident through the evening's proceedings that university students are not aware of the privilege of being able to study at university, and that giving back is, in fact, essential for keeping a university of a high standard running.

The SAWIP team would like to thank Mr Georgala for a great evening of discussion, and to the Kotzes for opening their home to us and for their great hospitality.
