The South Africa-Washington International program is pleased to present the Class of 2013. After a highly competitive process that drew over 140 applicants, fifteen exceptional students were selected to pursue an intensive six month development program in South Africa and the United States which aims to inspire and build their capabilities for leadership and service.

Grappling with the Route to Nation Building and acknowledging the potholes along the way.

SAWIP hosted a dialogue in Cape Town on the 14th of April 2013 to examine the need for Social Innovation and the Role of Memory and Legacy therein.

Erik de Ridder (SAWIP Alumnus 2011)

Erik de Ridder and Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh participated in SAWIP in 2011, during which time they built on a solid personal and professional relationship which had evolved during their time serving on University of Cape Town Students’ Representative Council. While on the SRC, Sizwe, Erik and the SRC 2010 team founded the African Student Leaders’ Summit which featured former President Thabo Mbeki.

SAWIP applications are open for just a few more days, closing midnight on Wednesday, February 20th. The SAWIP selection process happens in three phases: 1) the online application, 2) in-person interviews for successful applicants on their respective campuses, and 3) an intensive weekend selection camp for shortlisted candidates.

SAWIP Alumni: More Journeys to Oxford University

Melvyn has been selected as South Africa’s at-large Rhodes Scholarship recipient for 2013. He plans to study at Oxford University’s Saïd School of Business and obtain his Master’s degree in Financial Economics, as well as a Master’s in Economics for Development.

Introducing the SAWIP Opportunity Database

After almost a year of gathering information and making contacts, SAWIP is happy to announce the debut of the Opportunity Database. This database was created as a search engine for almost 100 different opportunities ranging from scholarships and fellowships to grants and volunteer opportunities that fit the interests of SAWIP alums.
