After a flurry of activity, welcoming the new Programme Manager Kim Williams on board, SAWIP is well into the swing of this years programme activities.
Applications have now closed for this year so for those of you that missed out, there is always next year, be sure to keep checking up on the website for when the applications for 2011 open. For those of you that applied, we will let you know within the next couple of days whether or not you have an interview. The selection panel is extremely impressed by the calibre of students that applied this year so this is going to be a VERY tough process.
Good luck to you all!!!

Looking Towards a Brighter South Africa by Ziyanda Stuurman It is a widely shared opinion that the 1994 and these past April 2009 elections were the most important in South Africa’s history both as a nation and a fledging democracy. It is true that both represent a pivotal turning point for South African society at large. Our country is currently dealing with a gambit of issues which the current ANC government has vowed to individually address and conclusively put to rest. President Jacob Zuma himself acknowledges that there is much work to be done when he says: “millions of South African voters made us, the ANC, their public representatives, the custodians of their hopes and dreams. The next five years will depend on us as public representatives to serve them with dignity and respect. The South African people have high expectations and we as the Executive will do our best to be more hands-on, more accessible and to deliver on our commitments”. |

Last year, Greg Nott, a partner in our Johannesburg received the following email:
My name is Vuyolwethu Goni. I am an intermediate law student at the University of Cape Town Law School. I was one of the SAWIPers who was at the graduation dinner at Jonkershuis in Groot Constantia. I would like, once again, to thank you for your inspiring speech that you gave at the event. It reaffirmed our faith in the prospect of South Africa, as well as reassured our willingness to play our part in South Africa and Africaʼs future development. As one of South Africaʼs youth I hope to have joined those who have acknowledged South Africa and Africa's challenges and want to respond accordingly. I do recall you mentioned a bit about your firm, and would like an opportunity to learn more about it and hopefully build a relationship with the firm. I am open to anything that would allow me to grow in my legal education and training.

TWELVE young South African leaders have just been offered an opportunity of a lifetime, earning a place on the South African Washington Internship Programme.
The programme, though encouraging service and leadership, aims to create a South Africa with strong leaders who have a global perspective and who serve others with humility and integrity, and in so doing inspire future generations to do the same.
