As the final stretch of DC is starting to come to an end I’m beginning to evaluate all that this experience has meant to me.
Whilst initially I looked at the program as an opportunity to determine my postgraduate path, meet new people, engage with young leaders in South Africa and gain incredible work experience - this opportunity has become so much more.
Not only has it allowed for me to develop my existing skills, it has challenged me to adapt and grow in new areas. My ideologies, my beliefs and my concerns regarding South Africa and the world alike have been at times reaffirmed and at others rethought, reshaped and/or entirely adapted.
I applied for this program in the belief that I had the potential to develop my country in some small way and I will leave this program knowing that I can. I am more certain than ever that the future of South Africa is firmly placed in the competent hands of my fellow SAWIP friends.
I have made new friends, I have met future leaders and I have decided on my postgraduate path but above and beyond that I have reignited my passion for South Africa. I have been humbled by the respect that my country gathers amongst those who are exceptionally informed and I carry a sense of duty to ensure that this is the case globally.
Moreover I have once again been reminded of my role within my communities. I am fortunate to be here and to be gaining the knowledge that is available to be on a daily basis but it is my responsibility to put this to good use within these communities for the benefit of all.
To whom much is given, much is owed rings true to this experience. Whilst I began this trip in early March in the belief that this was for me I leave knowing that this is for us, for South Africa.
Hi Samantha
I am so happy that the SAWIP experience and in particular this time in DC has impacted on you on so many levels. We are confident that you and the rest of the SAWIP team of 09, as well as the alumni, are going to be a leadership force to be reconed with in SA!
Enjoy the remaining week. I am sure it will hold quite a few more opportunities for learning, contributing and fun.
Take care.
Sally
