I have never felt comfortable sharing my personal thoughts in such a public forum. Hence, it is with a little anxiety and a leap of faith that I write this….
When we landed here in Washington, I was not sure what to expect…. 6 weeks in a foreign place, with a new family, holding down a proper job and navigating my way through the epicenter of global politics was completely daunting.
That said, I’m happy to say that all my fears have been allayed! From the moment I saw Penny’s (host mom) warm smile and Ramzy’s (host brother) chilled, surfer-cum-rockstar disposition, I knew that this was going to be a perfect match. Over the last few days, I have got to know them better and gain an understanding of who they are and what makes them tick. To be honest, there was really no adjustment to be made. I feel very much on their level and we seem to gel amazingly well. I am in awe of the work that Penny has been doing in international development and particularly how humble and kind she is. I look forward to spending more time with her, learning from her. Ramzy and I get on like a house on fire. I was blown away by what a great, passionate musician he is. I have not a musical bone in my body, but I know a good thing when I hear it;)) We’ve had some good times already and it’s only been 4 days!
My internship is AMAZING. I have an incredible supervisor, Susan who has really gone out of her way to make me feel welcome and ensure that I am kept busy by interesting things all day. I am interning at CSPAN covering Capitol Hill, the White House as well as international politics. I love the buzz around the office. Everyone is opinionated and up to date. This makes for great conversation as well as arguments (which I particularly love!). I am attending a Gala Dinner tomorrow night with CSPAN where President Obama is speaking!!!!!!! After meeting Nelson Mandela, I thought the next great person I would meet would be at the pearly-white gates of heaven (or not so pearly or white gates the other way!) WOW WOW WOW, I have not been this excited for a looong time!
On a different note, I am really enjoying developing stronger relationships with my fellow team members. Each of them is completely different and special in their own way. It has been great learning about all their little quirks and sharing some of the most incredible moments in my life with them. The Irish students have also been really easy to get along with. I find that they are culturally similar to us and I am keen to get to know them better (possibly over the rugby this weekend!).
So, that is what’s up in a very small nutshell! Life is good! Watch this space!
p.s. I am definitely starting to miss certain South Africans more and more….
hey vivek. great stuff. So glad you are having an awesome time. looking forward to hearing more. say hi to Penny and Ramzi for me. ciao
Well finally, a blog… but well worth the wait I say. Thanks Viv glad you are having a good time!
HI Vivek
Good to hear that things are working out well both on the ‘home’ and work fronts. We are all extremely envious of your opportunity to attend a function at which Pres Obama was the main guest! You must be happy about the rugby results!
Take care
Sally
Just another stupid handout to third-world people. What a WASTE of tax money. Nobody gives a s$%# about your internship or your debate loser activities.
