Many thanks to Brian Currin for arranging the reception with John Carlin, author of Playing the Enemy, at the beautiful Steenberg Wine Estate and Hotel. I can honestly say that Mr Carlin’s talk was one of the better that I have attended in recent years. It was wonderful to be given a small glimpse into the inner workings of a country that I call my own, and an opportunity to understand the people that made the space for our little ‘miracle’ to occur.
The talk was especially pertinent in that we have just had our fourth peaceful election, with record voter turnout, which has resulted in: a new opposition Party in Parliament, a new Premier of the Western Cape and a newly inaugurated president. We live in exciting times!
It was an awe-inspiring experience. Mr Carlin is both an exceptional story teller and Public speaker. It was really an honour to have met him, and great to gain a different perspective not only of our history, but the current situation in our country.
