South Africa and the island of Ireland share similar histories of segregation and violence and are now in the process of developing a stronger and unified society. However, despite these parallels, both have experienced different results in resolving long-standing conflict and managing their diverse societies. Today, both find themselves in different political and economic circumstances that need specific and targeted means to address outstanding issues and grievances. SAWIP, begun as an initiative of alumni and volunteers of the Washington Ireland Program for Service and Leadership (WIP), has become a means for young South Africans to take on greater responsibilities, develop a sense of mutual understanding and shared experiences that transcend identity and encourage others to contribute to positive social change.
