Real world experience provided through six week work exposure in prestigious environments in Washington, DC.

 

The South Africa-Washington International Program is helping to inspire, prepare and support South African youth to lead a sustainable democracy with a peaceful and prosperous future for all its citizens.

Jean Scrimgeour

Jean was selected in 2007 into the first SAWIP pilot program which spent six weeks as interns in Washington DC. She then led the 2008 SAWIP Team as their Manager. Such was her enthusiasm and commitment to SAWIP that she made herself available, for modest remuneration, to be the first Program Manager in 2009. During her term as Program Manager Jean helped to develop SAWIP into a more extensive leadership development experience. She remains active in Alumni affairs and serves on the Alumni Committee.

Michael Currin (MT)

Michael was invited to Washington DC to participate in part of the Washington-Ireland Program for Leadership and Service (WIP) and, in this way, begin to explore the possibility of establishing the South Africa-Washington Internship Program (SAWIP). During his undergraduate years in Electromechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town he was involved, with others, in the development of SAWIP from its initial exploratory phase, through its pilot years to its full establishment. He served as the Manager of the 2007 and 2008 SAWIP Teams, is an honorary SAWIP Alumnus, and now sits on the SAWIP(SA) Board.
